Who is behind Oh So Quiet?

My name is Pia Stigaard Skammelsen, I am 44 years old and the entrepreneur behind Oh So Quiet.

I will be the one at the other end of the phone if you have any questions. I will also be the one making sure that the summer cottages are properly selected and ready for your visit, and I am responsible for developing new routes so you can go exploring in new places in the beautiful nature of Northern Jutland.

As an entrepreneur, I am involved with pretty much everything regarding the Oh So Quiet walking holidays, I am both the CEO and the service employee. That wide range in tasks is something I cherish a lot.

Since I came up with the idea of walking holidays in the winter of 2017-2018, things have been evolving rapidly.

  • In 2018 I pitched my idea and was fortunate enough to be selected for the innovation programme TourismX. Here I got help putting the finishing touches to and testing the Oh So Quiet concept. TourismX. Here I got help putting the finishing touches to and testing the Oh So Quiet concept.
  • In 2019 I was again fortunate to be selected for Innofounder Experienced. and was able to quit my fulltime job for 10 years at Aalborg University.
  • In 2020 I was ready to welcome the first guests. No less than 340 people went on an Oh So Quet walking holiday, despite COVID-19. A dream beginning for my little business.

Being able to share my passion for walking by making it easier and more comfortable for everyone to go on a walking holiday, is the most meaningful thing I have done in my entire life!

The idea

The idea for Oh So Quiet was founded during a hike in Thy National Park in the autumn of 2017, where the place I grew up revealed a different side itself that I had never really noticed before. The beautiful dune landscape was a wilderness that seemed untouched/unspoiled by man. Deep conversations with my friend in the stunning surroundings left me with an unforgettable experience.

Back home, thoughts about a new hiking concept started to take shape. Especially because of the feedback I got from my family, friends and other competent people in my professional network, and later both Thy National Park and Thisted Municipality.

I love to grab my boots and walk in beautiful settings and enjoy the quietness of nature without having to sleep in the great outdoors. I tend to prefer more comfortable accommodations than shelters but I found this type of outdoor experiences quite limited. That is why I wanted to design a concept that is close to nature without being too primitive.

The stone from the Oh So Quiet-logo

was a gift left on my doorstep with this letter:

“In the envelope, there is a stone I found at the beach during testing of the Oh So Quiet-hike. It was in my pocket for the remaining time and represents everything that a hike from Oh So Quiet offers.

The stone was with us while we walked in silence along the rough North Sea when we got lost in the plantation as the rain was pouring down, and along the scenic landscape by the North Sea Trail.

The stone listened to all the songs we sang and the conversations both silly, funny and informative as well as profound and important - all of which require some extra attention. It was, among other things, this Oh So Quiet-hike that helped my daughter understand that she wanted to switch school. An important conversation between a parent and a child where Oh So Quiet help to set the scene.

Since we got home, we found a place for the stone in the windowsill as a memory. Now the stone is yours, loaded up with so many Oh So Quiet moments”.

I did hesitate for one moment. The stone had to be incorporated into my logo!
